I qualified from St Andrew’s, Scotland and Manchester. I underwent post graduate training in the north west of England together with two years in Harvard Medical School, USA. I gained a fellowship from The Royal College of Surgeons in 1982 followed by a higher degree by thesis in 1989. I was appointed consultant to Neath Hospital in 1993 and, 18 months later, moved to the South West Wales Cancer Centre in Swansea.
